This is Gary Pinson here. My ham shack is located at Quitman, Wood County, Texas, USA. I am new to ham radio world and I have just recently passed my Technician and General exams in the month of June of 2022. Even though it is late in my life, I have always had an interest in electronics, and radios in particular all my life. This website documents my journey into the Amateur Radio world. I hope to, on this site to share my experiences, make available great resources, review radio equipment and make suggestions to those who are willing to learn from my experiences and / or mistakes along the way.
It was once said that, “Amateur Radio is a hobby, using it’s hobby to talk about it’s hobby”, but it is so much more. Amateur Radio (ham radio) brings people, electronics and communication together. It’s fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. The Federal Communications Commission considers amateur radio a service to the public, to be pursued for the sake of advancing the art of radio and providing emergency communication during those times of need. Our local emergency preparedness group in Wood County, Texas is the WC3EPG – Wood County, Texas Emergency Preparedness Group.
People have used ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones until now. With the introduction of new technologies such as DMR Digital Mobile Radio and Zello, we are now seeing a marriage of Amateur Radio and the Internet using Wifi and hotspots to connect to one another locally and all over the world. It is the best of both technologies brought together to contribute to the advancement of the radio art in the modern day world, but more on that later.
